M8 Messages Keep Crashing
ProblemHello, I came across your webpage and was hoping you could help me too. I have an HTC one M8 and I wish I never bought it. I went in to buy the Galaxy5 at the time and the sales man talked me into the M8. Anyway, I have multiple issues with the phone but the one that is making me nuts right now is messages keeps crashing. I even took of 10 gigs worth of videos and pictures thinking my phone may just be over loaded, to no avail. Messages are also scrolling very slow and hesitant. Do you have any ideas as to what could be causing this? Thank you in advance for your help.
Solution: If the messaging app is acting slow then you should try clearing the cache and data of this app first and see if this resolves the issue.
  • From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Scroll to ‘PHONE,’ then tap Apps.
  • Scroll left to the ALL tab.
  • Tap the Messaging application.
  • Tap Clear Cache.
  • Tap OK.
  • Tap Clear Data.
If the problem persists then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Down key.
  • Press and release the Power key to turn the phone on.
  • Continue holding the Volume Down.
  • Release the Volume Down key when the three Android images appear on the bottom of the screen.
  • Press the Volume Down key once to move the cursor from FASTBOOT to RECOVERY.
  • Press the Power key to begin the wipe.
  • The device displays the bootup screen followed by a phone with a red triangle.
  • Press the Up Volume key and Power key at the same time.
  • Press the Down Volume key three times to select Wipe cache partition.
  • Press the Power key to initiate the wipe.
  • Wait until the phone displays Cache wipe complete.
  • Press the Power key to select Reboot system now.
M8 Speaker Issues After Lollipop Update
ProblemFirst, I would like to thank you for being out there with all this great knowledge you’re sharing with everyone. I’ve been having sound issues with my phone ever since I did the lollipop update.  I contacted HTC and followed their instructions to go into recovery mode and wipe cache partition and restart in safe mode, but that did not resolve my issue. ever since the update, I get no sound from the speakers after I unplug my headphones or disconnect from a Bluetooth device. also, the speaker volume reduces to half the volume five to ten minutes after I turn the phone on. even when I turn the volume all the way up with the volume rocker, the actual output from the speakers is reduced. I’m tired of restarting my phone every time I want to use the speakers. can you help me, please?
Solution: If this issue started after the Lollipop update then its best to do a factory reset if you haven’t done it yet. Make sure to back up your phone data before proceeding.
  • Press and hold the Power button
  • Tap Power off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Down key.
  • Press and release the Power key to turn the phone on.
  • Continue holding the Volume Down key.
  • Release the Volume Down key when the three Android images appear on the bottom of the screen.
  • Press the Volume Down key twice to move the cursor from FASTBOOT to FACTORY RESET.
  • Press the Power key to perform the master reset.
M8 Rebooting Phone Without Using Power Button
ProblemDear TDG, Thank you for providing such a great newsletter. I have an HTC M8. Carelessly, I dropped the phone and unluckily, it landed with impact on the power button. The casing around the power button is dented, and the left side of the button is permanently depressed (that will also describe me if I can’t find a solution). The button is now temperamental and I dare not switch off the phone in case I can never switch it back on again. I can lock and unlock my phone using the touch screen, no probs there. What I’d like to know is, how can I reboot the phone using touch screen, ie without using the power button? Thanks a million.
Solution: You should try checking the Google Play Store for apps that restart your phone. Make sure to read the description of these apps since most of them work only on rooted phones.
A more permanent solution is to have the power button of your phone fixed at an authorized service center.
M8 Can’t Send Photos Over Text Message
ProblemI have an HTC One not the M8 but the previous one and I have a slight issue I had my mobile data shut off, that not being the issue, but I can’t send or receive an image’s over text message, I can still send text message and make phone calls but when it comes to images I can’t do anything, I thought I could send and receive images on Wi-Fi but it seems not I’m wondering if there is a fix for this? If I could get a response that would be very helpful.
Solution: You need to turn on your mobile data and have an active data subscription to be able to send pictures over text messages. Aside from this your phone also needs to have the correct carrier APN settings.
M8 Rear Camera Issue
ProblemHi I have a HTC one m8 that all the sudden has some camera issues all the sudden the “selfie” camera works fine but the camera on the other side when activated produces a “radio static” noise and it shows up as wavy stripes when taking a picture looking at the outside lens everything looks fine but I’m not a computer guy so I’m not sure if this is a software or hardware issue any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated I’ve included a picture to show what the camera is doing.
Solution: Try to restart your phone first and see if this resolves the issue. If the problem still persists then the quickest way to check if this is a software related problem is to do a factory reset. Make sure to back up your phone data first before proceeding.
If the issue persists then this may already be a hardware related problem. You should bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
M8 Turns Off On Its Own
ProblemHi droid guy, um i have a htc m8 one, i have taken good care of it I’ve had it for a year now, i dont know what happened to it all of a sudden it likes to turn of by itself now, it turns off when I’m using it message, alarm, FB, videos or even browsing at my photos.. the only way I can use it is by plugging my phone on charge because if I take the charger off it will turn off and won’t turn back on unless I put it back on the charger, so basically I use it at home or in the car or anywhere that has a power point, can you help me please.
Solution: It looks like the battery of your phone may already be weak and may need to be replaced. However, we also can’t discount the possibility that this may be a software related issue. You should check first if this is the case by backing up your phone data and doing a factory reset.
If the problem still persists then bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
M8 Not Getting MMS/ Group Messages
ProblemHello, we recently purchased HTC one that were at&t phones.  We are using ting for our service.  We cannot download mms message or group messages.  We have contacted ting who could not fix this issue.  Can you help?
Solution: It’s likely that the phone APN is still set for AT&T and not for Ting. You can check on this by following the steps listed below.
  • From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap the Connections tab.
  • Tap More networks.
  • Tap Mobile networks.
  • Tap Access Point Names.
Check if the following settings are present in your phone. Make the necessary corrections if needed.
Ting Data APN settings
  • Name: Ting Data
  • APN: wholesale
  • APN type: If there is a free form field, enter the following exactly as written without spaces: default, admin, fota, mms, supl, hipri, internet, dun
  • If your device has a series of check boxes rather than a free form field, check all the boxes that correspond with the values listed above. For example: your device has checkboxes for default, mms, supl, wap and ia. Check only default, mms and supl.
  • If it’s not set, enter 310 for MCC.
  • If it’s not set, enter 260 for MNC.
  • For APN protocol, enter IPv6
  • For APN roaming protocol, enter IPv6
  • Tap the Menu key/icon
  • Tap Save
  • Select Ting Data as your APN
  • Restart your device and wait for it to find the Ting network–this may take a minute or so
  • Confirm that you’re able to access data
Ting MMS APN Settings
  • Name: Ting MMS
  • APN: wholesale
  • APN type: Type in or select (if available): mms
  • MMSC: http://wholesale.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
  • If it’s not set, enter 310 for MCC.
  • If it’s not set, enter 260 for MNC.
  • For APN protocol, enter IPv4
  • For APN roaming protocol, enter IPv4
  • Tap the Menu key/icon
  • Tap Save
  • Select Ting Data as your APN – your phone will use the MMS APN settings automatically as it needs to.
  • Restart your device and wait for it to find the Ting network–this may take a minute or so
  • Confirm that you’re able to send and receive picture, video and group messages.
