PROBLEM #1: “DM-VERITY VERIFICATION FAILED” ERROR ON GALAXY S6
I bought this phone (unlocked) through a small cell phone store, and some time later, I noticed that regardless of how many times I restarted it, I could not update the software (it would always show an error message, something like “An error ocurred…Please try again later”, and regardless of how many times I tried it, both on Wi-Fi and data, it would always show that message). So, although it didn’t bug me too much, I did some research and rooted it with Odin (my phone’s model number is SMG920W8). That didn’t fix the software update issue either, so I was like, eh, whatever.
Now, I’ve had no other issues with this phone. I got a cell phone plan, it worked alright (WIND, although their reception is terrible in some buildings), and had no problems. Now, one day, I’m talking on the phone, it works fine. About 25-30 minutes later, I’m on the bus, scrolling through Instagram (using my data plan), and I pull down the notification bar and it says “Unregistered SIM”. Never had that issue before, and the data plan was still working, so I figured, maybe it just needs a reboot or something? I come home, search the issue up, reboot, take out the SIM card and put it back in, put it in airplane mode and turn it back on and off, still doesn’t fix it. I had lots of work for those days, so I got a bit lazy and didn’t take it to WIND right away. The data still works, but after a few days, I play around with the Network settings (chose Scan Automatically or Select Networks, something like that), and instead of “Unregistered SIM”, it now shows “Emergency Calls Only” (and briefly, “Not registered on network”, after I select “Wind” from the list of available networks). Yesterday, I was dragged to WIND by my mom, told them the problem with the phone, and left (had to go back to work). When I came home, I found out that they hadn’t been able to fix it, they tried my SIM card in their phones and it worked, so they said there was a problem with my phone.
Now today, I have been using multiple USB cables, finally managed to root/flash the SMG920W8 firmware via ODIN again, went into recovery mode, wiped the cache partition, factory defaulted, even selected “reboot to bootloader”, still didn’t work. For the past hour, I’ve been searching up stuff about IMEI, and I realized that the IMEI displayed in my phone settings, is different from the one printed on the back of the phone. I’m not sure of what I did wrong, but just now when I reinserted the SIM card and it gave me a prompt to restart the phone, the recovery menu showed up with the message “dm-verity verification failed”. Stupid me decided to wipe the cache and reboot system now, and then it just kept flashing the Samsung Powered by Android logo continuously. I held down the volume button and power button for multiple 30 second intervals, didn’t work, and then I held the power button, volume button, and home button, and am now sitting with my phone in the “Downloading…Do not turn off target” blue-screen-of-likely-death mode (think it’s called Recovery mode). Any idea of what to do? — Zukhruf
Solution: Hi Zukhruf. Your attempts to modify the firmware may have affected the information stored in the EFS folder somehow that’s why the software side is now showing a different IMEI. The same procedure may have also triggered something in the firmware causing the phone to remain stuck in recovery mode. The best thing that you can do now is to try to flash the stock firmware for this particular model. If you can no longer access download mode, or the phone continues to boot in recovery mode instead of download mode, ask help from your service provider for more advanced software troubleshooting.
PROBLEM #2: GALAXY S6 RESTARTS ITSELF EVERY FEW MINUTES
Hello. I would like to see if you can help me in any way possible. My Galaxy S6 hasn’t been properly working well. I’ve done about several hard reset, wipe cache partition and that’s about it to address this issue but it has not been fixed at all. Even if I did all of that what my issue is that everytime I turn on my phone 3 – 5 minutes on it turns off and it repeats the same thing over and over again. I have no idea how to fix it. So, can you please reply to me as soon as possible?
I can’t really do anything like going to the settings for the app store because I have factory reset it it many times. and can you also give me advice or some way to get my old information back when i factory reset it? if you can please contact me. Solution: Hi Kainalu. If your phone restarts on its own after several minutes of use, that’s an indicator that it may be overheating (although you may not have felt the heat). Now, overheating in itself may only be a symptom of an underlying cause. Smartphones are designed to shut down automatically if its core reaches a certain heat threshold to prevent damage. Your first task is to identify what the real problem may be.
Sometimes, overheating can be due to malware or third party app. Try to perform another round of factory reset and observe the phone for a full day without installing any application. Doing so will help you identify if a third party app is to causing the phone to overheat. If the phone continues to restart after a few minutes, you can be sure that there’s a hardware issue at hand. Either the battery’s defective, or some component/s in the phone itself is not working properly. Make sure to have the phone repaired or replaced by Samsung.
PROBLEM #3: GALAXY S6 DISCHARGES FASTER EVEN WHEN CHARGING
Hey. My Galaxy S6 had some weird issues while charging. I’m using the stock charger and cable that came with the phone.
The problem started a month ago. When I connect the cable to my phone it shows me that it is cable charging and after shaking the cable a bit.. It shows that it is fast charging.
Now the phone shows that it is fast charging and it actually doesn’t charge at all, in fact it discharges while it should be charging..
So If my phone was 20% and I put it to charge while I’m using it.. it discharge until it comes to 0% and the phone dies.. while it is charging. Please help. — Bola
Solution: Hi Bola. This type of issue is usually caused by having multiple apps running in the background during the charging process. You can try to uninstall apps until the issue has been eliminated, or run the phone in safe mode while charging. Safe mode prevents third party apps from running so if any of your third party applications is the culprit, the phone should charge normally. To boot in safe mode, just follow these steps:
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
- Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
- You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.
PROBLEM #4: GALAXY S6 WON’T TURN ON IF NOT CONNECTED TO A CHARGER
My phone turns off automatically. Then I turned it on and it turned on all the way then just turned off again so I plugged it in and let it charge over night. it said that it was at 87 then it wouldn’t charge anymore then it said it was at 99 then back to like 24. At this point it wouldn’t turn on at all, and would only try to turn on when it was plugged in. It was just have the Galaxy S6s show up over and over again. When we did number 4 on the restart screen it turned on all the way then just turn off again as soon as i got into the phone. I just go this phone 4 months ago and i cant get another one there is not other option other than me going to a different carrier and spending 600 dollars.
PLEASE HELP. I also did number 2 on the restart screen aware that it gets rid of all my apps and contacts and it did do anything. My phone just shows that it is charging now. When i turn it on the farthest it will go is to the Verizon sign then it will just turn of again. Im pretty sure that is fully charged now. — Jori
Solution: Hi Jori. Please follow our suggestion for Bola above so you’ll know if one of your apps is to blame. If the issue persists even when on safe mode, do a factory reset before charging the phone again. Here are the steps to do that:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
PROBLEM #5: GALAXY S6 CUSTOM RECOVERY INSTALLATION
Hello. I’m stuck in a reboot loop. My phone will start up, stay on for 15-30 seconds, then reboot again. I noticed that it starts going through some configurations and settings, but doesn’t finish. For example, it doesn’t get connected to my carrier, but it does connect to Wi-Fi. At the time when the issue started, nothing was installed. My phone shutdown while listening to Youtube videos. A couple weeks ago, I updated like 60+ apps because I don’t have auto-updates turned on. I noticed sluggishness with my phone after that.
I have tried to clear the cache partition, the issue still exist. I have started the phone in Safe Mode, the issue still exist. I went to Verizon, they started in Safe Mode. Issue still exist. They recommended factory mode.
I just have baby pics that aren’t backed up yet. So, I would like a couple other options before taking the nuclear option of wipe everything. I don’t backup to the cloud either. Any ideas? The phone stays on in the system recovery mode.

Is there anyway to access the memory from the pre-boot screens to copy application data off my machine?
I can start uninstalling apps to see if I can remove the corruption if you think that would help. Any idea would be appreciated. —Sylvester
Solution: Hi Sylvester. If you want to create a backup of your phone files without loading the operating system, you must first flash or install a custom recovery software like ClockworkMod Recovery or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). While the stock recovery environment in your S6 works effectively as designed, it lacks the backup option to allow users to access the NANDroid chip that stores your files. Try to use Google in searching for steps how to install a custom Recovery on your S6.
