Being stuck in boot loop is one of the results of corrupt firmware and it usually occurs after a firmware update or manual installation of modified ROMs. We’ve been receiving a lot of issues like this from #Samsung Galaxy S5 (#GalaxyS5) owners lately. So, in this post I addressed some firmware-related problems.
Read on to know how to fix these issues just in case one may happen to you in the future. Here’s the list of the issues I included here…

Galaxy S5 stuck in boot loop after certain apps were installed
Problem: The day after she installed those apps, I was on the phone, heard a loud beep in my ear, and the screen froze. It then started the reboot loop. I took the battery out and let the battery cool, and after several failed attempts, and leaving it alone for awhile, it worked. It crashed once the next morning. So, I left it alone, and it came back to life. I deleted all apps I don’t use and cleared the caches for each, and it seemed to be doing fine. My daughter grabbed my phone later and was doing a quiz online and it crashed again. I have done a hard factory reset and it’s still stuck in the reboot loop. I can’t make it function. Help.
Troubleshooting: We can go all day trying to find the culprit without the guarantee that the issue will be fixed. Since you already did the factory reset, I assume you already did all the hassles of backing up your data. So, I suggest you do the master reset. It’s simply like the factory reset but it also reformats the data and cache partition:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Problem: Hello! Alright my problem is that I’ve had this phone for a year now, and in that year I have never ever been able to download anything what so ever with out wifi. All of my phones I’ve had have been on straight talk, this is my fourth phone and its the only one to have given me problem. I bought an AT&T Galaxy S5 and when I put my SD card in and changed the apn setting like I was supposed. In the corner is still says AT&T and it will not let me download apps (without wifi) or download any of the newer software(with wifi). I really hope you can help me because I love my phone and don’t plan on getting a new one anytime soon.
Answer: It should still say AT&T because you inserted the SD card instead of the SIM card. But assuming you did insert the SIM card, then you need to call Straight Talk as it’s apparently a provisioning issue.
Problem: Phone is only 1 year old in excellent condition. Over the last 6 weeks it would reboot on its own accord when in use. It would keep repeating over and over until I took out the battery. Very difficult to operate and then it just got worse. I took it to Optus store (retailer). They said “delete cache,” I did that, no improvement. Took it back. They said factory reset. No improvement. In fact, it became frozen. Took it back to Optus who sent to tech. They came back and said warranty is void because I downloaded some operating system? WTF. I have no idea what they are talking about. What can I do? They refuse to fix or give me a replacement under warranty.
Answer: They should have properly explained to you why they can’t honor your warranty claim. It’s your provider’s responsibility to provide you with information or explanation why they can replace your phone or why Samsung tech refused to repair it.
When the said that you “downloaded some operating system” onto your phone, it means that a firmware may have been manually installed, or it was rooted and a custom ROM was installed to it. Technicians can easily find out if the firmware running in the phone is modified or not.
Now that your provider and Samsung don’t want to fix it, find a technician who can manually re-install the firmware or operating system. That’s the only fix I can think of for you.
Problem: 1) The keyboard seems to constantly glitch out and push its own buttons, or il type something and it comes up with different numbers or letters and.
2) The screen will randomly go light grey but i can still see everything like it dimmed except for the top part where you can pull down the bar but i cant do anything when that happens nothing works.
Every time either of these happen i cant even turn off the phone because the screen wont work so i have to take the battery out every time. I have to do this like 20 times a day. This just started happening a few days ago.
Troubleshooting: While you mentioned two issues in your description, I think both are caused by one problem–screen issue.
It appears like there’s a problem with the screen itself; either it’s just a loose connection or it needs replacement. As an average end-user, you can’t do something about that, so let a technician check it up for you.
Problem: Every day get a notice to update system. Wifi good. 3GB avail. Say install now. Reboots and starts the install. Gets about 1/3 through and the shows the android fallen over with an exclaim, with “error” above. It restarts and everything is working normally. Verizon doesn’t know why. Answer: I hope that the 3GB you mentioned is in your phone’s internal storage because if it’s in your SD card, then the problem is with the storage.
The first thing I want you to do is clear the cache and data of the Download Manager service so as to clear all traces of failed installation:
- From any Home screen, tap Apps.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
- Swipe right to the DOWNLOADED screen.
- Scroll to and tap Download Manager.
- Tap Clear cache button.
- Tap Clear data button, then OK.
If the problem persists, try to free up some space and make sure you phone has at least 4GB in its internal storage.
Lastly, if you really want to update your phone, then do the reset.
Problems: My phone hasn’t updated since I’ve bought it, I delete so much off of it and disable apps and it says there isn’t enough space to download when there is.. it’s always done that and now I can’t run certain things on my phone because it’s not updated. My phone lags a lot.. It will turn black on the screen and freeze, my messages keep saying sending then I get notified that my messages aren’t sent. I’ll make outgoing calls and it’ll hang up before I even get a dial tone. Then out of nowhere it’ll work but the cycle continues. Answer: If it’s been like this since day 1, how come you only complained now? Why didn’t you have it replaced?
You have a lot of issues and most of them are related to the general performance of your device. So, backup your data and do the master reset. Follow instructions in the first problem.
Problem: I began using an SD card at the beginning of February with no issues. I moved my pictures to the card just fine. 2/14/16 I had to take the SD card out of my phone to put into the bigger SD card (the adapter card?) so I could take pictures with my Canon Camera. When I took the SD card out of my phone I took the battery out first (because I thought I could not get the SD card out with out taking the battery out first?) I left the battery out of my phone while I took the picture. After putting the SD card back and the battery back in I turned my phone on. And this is when the issues began. The time is incorrect, the date said 8/10/14, the location is incorrect, says no internet-“something went wrong. Check your connection and try again.” (even though I can get on my Pinterest app which is using the internet), received several (19) messages that something went wrong with Google Play Store, and worst of all when I can send a text message and it gets sent but I can not see what I sent also I get text messages but can not see them either except on my lock screen that just gives an alert and a little bit of the message!
I have turned the device off and on with and without the SD card, taken the battery out, and started it in safe mode. Please Help!
Answer: Actually, you already know what the problem is–the time and date is incorrect. So, fix the time and date and all these issues will be fixed. It looks like your phone defaulted to the time and date when it was first programmed after you removed the battery. But that should be fixed by setting up the correct time and date.
Problem: Hi there! Thank you for your help! This is the second device (Galaxy S5) that I have had the same issue with. Both phones were shipped to me brand new (but refurbished I think) as an upgrade and I returned the first one after we thought it was defective. This has occurred in the last 2 weeks and I have only had my current phone for 4 days. Yet I have immediate problems with them that shows up usually by the next day.
With my newest current device I did not back up anything except for what was backed up with my Google accounts. I do not have an SD card in the phone. The T-Mobile rep suggested that it was an app I was using on my phone.
I conducted a master reset, opened my Google accounts & I only downloaded for necessary apps for me. Space for apps for necessary for me to complete my job as I am an Uber driver and need to make money.
The phone is still occasionally lagging and freezing. I’ve already had to restart it which will correct the lagging temporarily. The lagging only happens intermittently and sporadically. I really need these apps to either make money or for daily communication. What the heck is going on? Is it really coming from one of these five apps? Uber partner, Facebook, Messenger, Expensify, and the Bible app.
Troubleshooting: Since you only have a few apps, it’s better if you find out if one of them is causing the problem or if it’s a firmware issue. So, isolate the problem, boot your phone in safe mode:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
In this mode, all apps you downloaded from Play Store will be temporarily disabled. So, if the problem is caused by one of them, the phone should lag or freeze in that state. However, if the issue remained, then it’s a firmware issue. Try to check if there’s available update for your device, if there’s none, then it’s time you talked with your provider again for possible replacement…again.
However, if the problem was fixed in safe mode, then one of your apps is causing it. You may try uninstalling one after another just to find out which is which and file a report to the developer through Play Store.
